Interviews

We each conducted an interview with a single parent of various backgrounds.
Participant 1: New mom of a newborn
Participant 2: Single dad of 2 via adoption
Participant 3: Divorced mom of 2
Participant 4: Mom of 2 whose partner lives abroad
We used an affinity diagram to evaluate the information from the interviews and identified the following findings.
Takeaways
-
Single parents are very independent and financially aware
-
Single parents rely on close friends and family for support
-
Caring for their children is their priority, leaving little time for themselves
-
They often feel isolated because they have to do everything themselves
Personas
We created two personas based on findings from our interviews. We noted similarities between participant responses to focus on experiences shared by multiple single parents. Our personas emulate potential users and highlighted personal characteristics, goals, and desires. These personas served as the foundation of our understating of the needs and desires of our user group. After receiving critiques, we made following changes:
-
We cut down some irrelevant background information in the scenario
-
We changed visual design of our personas to improve the readability

User Journey Map
We created a user journey map based on our persona, Susan. First, we mapped one day of her life. This presented her daily life really well but failed to help us pinpoint her struggles. Therefore, after getting critiques, we made following changes:
-
We created a map of Susan's experience of seeking help: looking for someone to pick up her kid from soccer practice
-
We made the "Actions" more detailed
